Ingredients
Scale
- 1 and 1/3 cups (160g) all-purpose flour
- 1 cup (213g) light brown sugar (packed)
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup (113g) unsalted butter (melted)
- nonstick baking spray
- 1 pound challah bread (cut into 1-inch cubes)
- 8 ounces (227g) brick-style cream cheese (cut into 1-inch cubes)
- 1 and 1/4 cups (284ml) milk
- 1 cup (227ml) heavy cream
- 6 large eggs
- 4 large egg yolks
- 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
- 1 cup (213g) light brown sugar (packed)
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon espresso powder (optional)
- 1 cup (113g) confectioners' sugar (sifted)
- 1/4 cup (60ml) maple syrup (plus more for serving)
- 3 tablespoons (42ml) milk
- 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
Instructions
- In a medium bowl, mix together the flour, brown sugar, salt, and cinnamon. Stir in the melted butter until just combined.
- Let the mixture sit to absorb the butter and become crumbly.
- Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with nonstick spray.
- Add the bread cubes into the baking dish and set aside.
- In a large bowl, whisk together the milk, cream, eggs, egg yolks, vanilla, brown sugar, cinnamon, and optional espresso powder until well blended.
- Pour this mixture over the bread cubes. Evenly distribute the cream cheese cubes over the top.
- Sprinkle the crumb topping evenly across the casserole. Cover with aluminum foil and refrigerate for at least 4 hours or overnight.
- When ready to bake, preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Allow the casserole to come to room temperature for about 15-30 minutes after removing from the fridge.
- Cover with foil and bake for 30 minutes, then uncover and bake for an additional 30-35 minutes until golden and firm in the center.
- Prepare the glaze by whisking together confectioners' sugar, maple syrup, milk, and vanilla, adding more milk for desired consistency before drizzling over the casserole before serving.
Notes
For best results, refrigerate overnight for enhanced flavor and texture.
You can substitute other types of bread like brioche, if preferred.
Feel free to add fruits like blueberries or bananas for extra flavor.
