  • Prep Time N/A
  • Cook Time 25–30 minutes
  • Yield 9 servings 1x

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 cup hot water
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (180°C). Prepare an 8-inch square baking pan by buttering and lining it with parchment paper.
  2. In a large bowl, combine the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, and salt.
  3. Add the egg, buttermilk, hot water, and oil to the dry ingredients and whisk until smooth.
  4. Pour the batter into the prepared pan and tap lightly to eliminate air bubbles.
  5. Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Keep the cake in the pan.
  6. To frost, prepare the One Minute Chocolate Frosting as directed.
  7. Pour the frosting over the warm cake and allow it to set for at least 2 hours before slicing.
  8. Serve with vanilla ice cream and enjoy! Store any leftovers covered at room temperature for up to 3 days.

Notes

Make sure to butter the sides of the pan well to prevent sticking.
Allow the cake to cool slightly before frosting for a smooth finish.
For a richer flavor, let the cake and frosting sit at room temperature before serving.
